The Facts About Teen Pregnancy in Florida
The United States has the highest rates of teen pregnancy and births in the western industrialized world. Teen pregnancy costs the United States at least $9 billion annually. Thirty-one percent of young women become pregnant at least once before they reach the age of 20—about 750,000 a year. Eight in 10 of these pregnancies are unintended and 81 percent are to unmarried teens.
Teens Need Comprehensive Sex Education
- Regardless of age, income or gender, nearly 9 out of 10 Florida voters, including many who describe themselves as evangelical Christians, believe public schools should offer some form of sex education. Voters who describe themselves as evangelical or fundamentalist Christians are only slightly less likely to agree that students need to hear about more than abstinence.
- An overwhelming 78% of registered voters support a proposal that would require sex education to be taught in Florida public schools.
