Collier School Board will change district’s sex ed policy
July 31, 2009, Naples Daily News
NAPLES — It’s not the curriculum, it’s the policy.
That became the debate Thursday night over whether or not the Collier County School Board should change its policy about sex education in the schools.
The current policy reads that the curriculum should address “an awareness of the benefits of sexual abstinence as the expected standard and the consequences of teenage pregnancy.” But a majority of board members thought that policy was too vague.
They voted 3 to 2 to revise the board’s policy. Board Chairwoman Pat Carroll and board member Steve Donovan dissented.

Sex is everywhere and Collier County teens say they learn about it all the time on the big screen.
At age 16, Kendall Wise said she has friends that are already having sex. But she says the sex education emphasis in school is a bit more conservative.
"To practice abstinence, really," she said.

U.S. teens get sex education, but not from parents
WASHINGTON, July 16 (Reuters) - U.S. teens are getting sex education, but most are not learning about birth control from their parents, new government data showed on Thursday.
And rates of infection with sexually transmitted diseases reflect this -- the annual rate of AIDS diagnoses for boys aged 15 to 19 years has nearly doubled in the past 10 years, and rates of syphilis are also up.
The numbers show that U.S. youth need better sex education, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
