To state Sen. Nancy Detert:
As chair of the Pre K-12 Education Committee, we understand that you have the
sole discretion on whether to hold hearings on the Healthy Teens Act.
The Manatee County League of Women Voters believes passage of the Healthy
Teens Act is crucial to the future of Florida.
The Healthy Teens Act will require Florida public schools to provide
comprehensive, medically accurate sex education, encourage family communication
about sexuality and provide life-saving information about other prevention
methods.
Not all families have open, healthy communication about sex. Denying our
youth accurate information about how to prevent HIV/AIDS puts their lives and
futures at risk.
Teen pregnancy costs the government $40 billion each year. And Manatee County
rates high on the list.
Give our teens a better chance for a productive life. We urge you to hold
hearings and support the passage of the Healthy Teens Act.
